Food Irradiation: Are You For or Against It?

It would certainly be a brilliant stroke if we could wave a magic wand over the nation's food supply to make it safe to eat. But since we can't, the next best thing could be food irradiation, which cuts down on illnesses caused by bacteria, such as salmonella and E. coli.

Irradiation is the process of exposing food to low doses of gamma rays, electron beams, or X rays. It inactivates harmful microorganisms, either by killing or sterilizing them, without making the food radioactive

Often in meals, soups are served as a first course. Depending on the amount of meat, fish, and vegetables, they could be served as a main course. Basically, soups are liquids which can be very thin or quite thick depending upon what they contain and are classified according to their thickness or to the principal liquid or other ingredients they contain. An old saying goes: "Eat your carrots; they're good for the eyes." Because studies have proven that carrots are packed with carotenoids, including beta carotene, the adage makes a lot of sense. Medical studies confirm that consuming foods rich in carotenoids may help prevent cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (a disease that affects the retina). Other studies also reveal that beta carotene and other carotenoids may also lower the risk of certain cancers.
